AI Governance Framework
What is it?
AI governance is different from AI management. Governance of AI is the system by which a governing body exercises ethical and effective leadership to establish:
- an ethical culture
- sustainable performance and value-creation through the achievement of strategic objectives and organisational purpose
- adequate and effective control by the governing body of AI resources and risks
- trust in the organisation, its reputation, and its legitimacy.
The challenge is to meet stakeholder expectations when multiple entities (e.g. provider, product manufacturer, deployer, importer, distributor, authorised representative, and users) participate in the development and deployment of the AI system. During the life cycle of the AI system, the components are "owned" by separate legal entities that control the resources for design, development, deployment and support.
The first step towards better governance is to establish accountability. This requires an examination of the roles and responsibilities within the AI development and deployment processes used for decision-making that can impact on the achievement of the intended purposes of the AI system.
